You’re An Adult Beginner - Brooklyn Cello Studio

Lessons for Adult Beginners

What would you rather be doing over the next few months?

  • Baking yet another loaf of sourdough bread
  • Doom-scrolling the news and compulsively checking your Twitter feed
  • Taking a “virtual” tour of Paris because you’re sad you haven’t been on a plane since last winter
  • Eating the stale chocolate chips sitting at the back of your kitchen cabinet

Or you could spend the next few months learning

  • How to read music
  • How to position your cello and know exactly where it should rest on your body
  • How to play the C, D, and G major scales (and knowing the key signatures for all of them and the fingering patterns)
  • How to play pieces by Hildegard von Bingen, Bartok, and Mendelssohn
  • How to start developing a supple and fluid bow arm
  • Cross “learning to play the cello” off your life to-do list

When was the last time you did something for you?

In our experience, doing something for yourself is the best way to cope with a situation that feels (…and is) wildly out of your control. And when you’re living in the year 2021, there is a *lot* that isn’t in your control.

Having the cello as your creative outlet will not only give you something to do instead of anxiously scrolling your social media feed, it’s going to help carry you into your life post-pandemic.

(It’s about stepping out of “comfortable” and into the deeply rewarding process of being fully engaged with working towards a goal that’s just for you.

Go from no-engagement (binging cello tutorials and scrolling the cello hashtag on IG until your thumb cramps up) to full engagement (learning how to to hold your bow, producing an even tone, and figuring out how to release your left thumb when shifting).

Starting the cello now means that you’ll be setting your future self up for:

  • Playing with other people!
  • Going to concerts!
  • Having strangers stop you and your cello on the street to tell you “I bet you wish you picked the flute” LOL. (not.)
  • Open up new possibilities for yourself because you’re taking on the new identify of becoming a “cellist”

I have a creative outlet… the cello keeps me from focusing on work 24/7.

Our weekly classes give you both flexibility and structure.

You’ll get to meet other people who are equally as into the cello as you are. And you’ll be learning from some of Brooklyn’s best and most adventurous musicians.

You’ll learn everything you need to know to develop a strong musical foundation and lay the groundwork for playing with other people and being able to sight read music.

And just so you know, classes at Brooklyn Cello Studio are NOT:

  • Super formal (no tux required)
  • Intimidating (…this is not the movie Whiplash)
  • Boring (AKA we will not teach you Twinkle Twinkle or Hot Cross Buns…unless you’re into that)
